Every year two deserving students walk out of one small Illinois university’s admissions office with a scholarship worth more than $200,000 over four years. Merit-Based Scholarships range from $15,000 to $38,000 a year, renewable for up to four years, and every single admitted international applicant is automatically considered. There is genuinely no separate form, no extra fee and no additional essay. You apply for admission, and if you are admitted, the scholarship committee has already looked at your transcript and test scores as part of that same process.
President’s Scholarships are different. It awards two full-tuition awards each year to two deserving students and does require a separate application and typically an interview, based on talent, interests, and academic achievement rather than test scores alone. If full-tuition coverage is your goal specifically, you need to actively opt into that process rather than assume automatic consideration will get you there.
What the Illinois Wesleyan President’s Scholarship Covers
Merit awards at the top end, $38,000 a year for four years, come close to covering IWU’s full sticker price on their own, since total tuition and fees run in the low $50,000s annually as of the most recent published figures. President’s Scholars pay no tuition at all for four years, which at current rates puts the total value of that award somewhere north of $200,000 across a degree.
International students can also submit the CSS PROFILE to be considered for additional need-based aid on top of merit awards. This means that a strong merit scholarship isn’t necessarily the ceiling on what you can receive.
What Kind of Student Gets In
IWU’s overall acceptance rate has hovered in the 39 to 45 percent range across recent admissions cycles depending on the year. Enrolled students average an SAT score somewhere between about 1120 and 1340, with an average high school GPA typically cited between 3.7 and 3.8.
IWU is small, with total undergraduate enrollment generally cited around 1,600 students, and an average class size of about 20, meaning you are not competing for professor attention in a lecture hall of 300. It is also ranked, per Niche’s analysis of Department of Education data, the number one college in Illinois and seventh nationally for getting a job after graduation. This is a genuinely relevant data point if career outcomes matter as much to you as the scholarship itself. IWU is located in Bloomington, which is home to State Farm’s corporate headquarters. This guarantees real internship density in insurance, finance, and actuarial science specifically for students in those fields.
Deadlines
Illinois Wesleyan runs two deadlines. Early Action closes November 15 and the regular deadline is March 15. Because Merit-Based Scholarships require no separate form, hitting either admission deadline automatically puts you in consideration. For the President’s Scholarship specifically, some admissions cycles have required that separate application closer to early-to-mid February, ahead of the general regular deadline, so if full tuition is the goal, don’t wait until March 15 to start that piece.
Required documents include official transcripts, a teacher recommendation (the School Report evaluation section covers this if you’re applying through the Common App), and either ACT/SAT scores or a personal interview if you’re applying test-optional. Non-native English speakers need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores, generally in the range of TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.5, though exact minimums are worth confirming directly since they can shift.
Final Thoughts
If you want the most straightforward path with the fewest extra application pieces, IWU’s Merit-Based Scholarship is genuinely automatic, which makes it a reasonable safety option to pair with a more demanding application like Clark’s. If you are specifically chasing full tuition and are comfortable with an interview process, the President’s Scholarship is worth the extra effort, though it is more competitive by definition since only two are awarded annually.
