Rhodes Scholarship 2027 Applications are Now Open. Apply Today…

Somewhere right now, a young person is sitting on an idea that could reshape a community, an industry, or even a nation. Maybe that person is you. And if it is, the Rhodes Scholarship just opened its doors for the 2027 cohort, inviting outstanding young people from around the world to pursue fully funded postgraduate study at the University of Oxford.

More than a Degree

The Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s oldest and most prestigious graduate fellowship. Since 1903, it has brought together people who share one defining quality: they are impatient with the way things are. They do not merely study problems, they go out and solve them.

Beyond covering tuition and living costs at Oxford, the scholarship places you inside one of the most powerful alumni networks on the planet. Over 8,000 living Rhodes Scholars are currently working across government, science, the arts, education, and beyond. You don’t just earn a postgraduate qualification. You join a lifelong fellowship built around a shared commitment to making the world better.

“The Rhodes Scholarship continues to seek out exceptional young leaders who demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to service, and the potential to drive positive change in the world.”

– Sir Richard Trainor, Interim Warden of Rhodes House

Who should Apply?

The selection criteria have guided this process since the very first cohort in 1902. Rhodes Scholars are not simply the highest-scoring students in a room. They are people who combine sharp academic minds with genuine character – individuals who lead not because they were asked to, but because they felt compelled to. They show up in their communities, take risks, and carry a quiet but fierce belief that things can be better.

If you have an academic background in engineering, technology, education, or social science, there are also complementary fully funded opportunities worth knowing about. We have covered some of the best of them here on The Lantern Post — including 15 fully funded Masters scholarships in Engineering and 18 fully funded Masters scholarships in Education that are open right now.

What makes a Rhodes Scholar?

The Rhodes Trust does not publish a checklist. What it looks for is harder to fake: a track record of excellence in your field, genuine service to others, and a sense of direction – a vision of how you intend to use your education to leave something better than you found it. Leadership is not defined by titles here. It is defined by action and impact.

Scholars are supported throughout their time at Oxford with a bespoke leadership programme designed to help each person discover how they, specifically, will lead. The community you build there tends to last a lifetime.

Applications are Open Now

Applications opened on 1 June 2026 for most constituencies around the world, with the US window opening on 1 July. The process is structured around Rhodes Constituencies – geographical territories that each run their own selection process. Your first step is to identify which constituency applies to you, then begin your application at the official Rhodes Trust website.

And if the Rhodes is not the right fit for your field or stage of career, do not stop there. The world of fully funded fellowships is far broader than most people realise. A great place to start is our roundup of the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, which funds researchers to live and work in Japan – a completely different path, but equally transformative.

The point is this: there has never been more money available for ambitious young people to pursue graduate education abroad. The question is not whether an opportunity exists for you. The question is whether you are willing to go looking for it.
